Hakeem completes an incredible trio of awards; the Spurs land two franchise legends in the draft; Larry Bird steps down as Pacers coach

1994

Hakeem Olajuwon leads the way with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists, as the Rockets defeat the Knicks 90-84 in game seven of the NBA Finals to clinch the first championship in franchise history. Olajuwon becomes the only player in NBA history to be named league MVP, Finals MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. Patrick Ewing averages 18.9 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 4.3 blocks per game in what turns out to be his only NBA Finals appearance.


1947

Pete Maravich is born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. He started playing on the varsity team at Daniel High School before he was even old enough to attend.

1962

Naismith Hall of Fame inductee Clyde Drexler is born in New Orleans, Louisiana.

1964

Gregory “Cadillac” Anderson is born in Dallas, Texas. His nickname was a joking term to describe the bicycle he would ride around campus at the University of Houston.

1968

Darrell Armstrong is born in Gastonia, North Carolina. He didn’t join the basketball team at Ashbrook High School until his senior year.

1982

Nicole Powell is born in Sierra Vista, Arizona. The Arizona Republic newspaper named her the Arizona High School Player of the Century in 2000.

1987

NBA champion Danny Green is born in North Babylon, New York.

David Robinson is the #1 pick in the NBA Draft of the Spurs, but would not join the team for two years as he served his U.S. Navy tour of duty. Meanwhile, the Bulls land Central Arkansas’ Scottie Pippen at the #5 pick (via trade with the SuperSonics) and Clemson’s Horace Grant at the #10 pick.

1988

Omri Casspi is born in Holon, Israel. He became the first Israeli-born player in NBA history upon joining the Kings in 2009.

1993

The 28th EuroBasket gets underway in Germany with four new nations participating due to the dissolutions of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russia, Slovenia, and Croatia. Serbia does not participate due to a suspension from FIBA. Russia ultimately won the silver medal and Croatia the bronze.

2000

True to his word when he took the job in 1998, Larry Bird steps down as Pacers coach after three seasons. He is replaced a few weeks later by his longtime playing rival, Isiah Thomas.

2017

Jimmy Butler is traded from the Bulls to the Timberwolves, along with the #16 pick of the NBA Draft, in exchange for Kris Dunn, Zach LaVine, and the #7 pick (used on Lauri Markkanen). Butler would spend just one season in Minnesota before getting traded again, to the 76ers.

Markelle Fultz (Washington) is the #1 overall pick of the 76ers in the NBA Draft, going ahead of future superstars Jayson Tatum (#3 to the Celtics), De’Aaron Fox (#5 to the Kings), Donovan Mitchell (#13 to the Jazz), and Bam Adebayo (#14 to the Heat).

2023

French phenom Victor Wembanyama is the #1 overall pick of the Spurs in the NBA Draft. He goes on to earn Rookie of the Year honors.
