The Flu Game; the #8 seed Knicks reach the NBA Finals; Dwight Howard sets a Finals blocks record

1997

The Bulls defeat the Jazz 90-88 in game five of the NBA Finals, a.k.a. “The Flu Game,” with Michael Jordan playing through intense “flu-like symptoms” (which were later revealed to be the result of food poisoning) to score 38 points. The Jazz led for most of the second half until a Jordan three-pointer with 25 seconds left gave Chicago the lead for good. Chicago takes a 3-2 advantage in the series and went on to close it out two days later with a game six victory.


1967

On the final day of competition in the FIBA World Championship in Uruguay, the Soviet Union clinches their first gold medal by defeating Yugoslavia, 71-59. The Yugoslavians settle for silver while the United States finishes in a disappointing fourth place for the second straight FIBA Worlds by losing 80-71 to bronze medalist Brazil.

1982

Diana Taurasi is born in Chino, California. Her parents are both Argentine immigrants and her father Mario played professional soccer.

1989

WNBA legend Maya Moore is born in Jefferson City, Missouri.

1993

Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley battle it out in game two of the NBA Finals, with the Bulls prevailing 111-108 over the Suns to take a 2-0 series lead. Jordan finishes with 42 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists, while Barkley puts up 42 points and 13 rebounds for Phoenix, who becomes the first team ever to lose games one and two of an NBA Finals at home.

1994

The United States women’s team, featuring Dawn Staley, Teresa Edwards, Sheryl Swoopes, and Lisa Leslie, is stunned by Brazil in the semifinals of the FIBA World Championship for Women in Sydney, Australia. It breaks a streak of 21 consecutive wins at the FIBA Worlds for the U.S. team. Brazil goes on to defeat China for the gold medal while the United States settles for a bronze medal game win over Australia.

1999

Despite Patrick Ewing missing the majority of the series with a torn tendon, the Knicks finish off an Eastern Conference Finals upset of the Pacers with a 90-82 victory in game six, becoming the first #8 seed to ever reach the NBA Finals.

2009

Dwight Howard sets the NBA Finals single game record with nine blocked shots, also finishing with 16 points and 21 rebounds. But it’s in a losing effort as Derek Fisher hits a late three pointer to force overtime, where the Lakers dominate the Magic to win 99-91 and take a commanding 3-1 series lead.
