In front of a record crowd of over 39,000 at the Kingdome, the visiting Bullets eradicate a 15-point second half deficit to defeat the SuperSonics 120-116 in overtime of game four of the NBA Finals, evening the series at 2-2. Seven different Washington players score in double figures, led by Bob Dandridge with 23 points. Dennis Johnson finishes with 33 points for the Sonics but also misses crucial minutes down the stretch after suffering a bruised rib, which hampered him for the remainder of the series.
1949
P.J. Carlesimo is born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His father Peter coached football, cross-country, and basketball at the University of Scranton, while simultaneously serving as athletic director.
1959
The Soviet Union clinches a second consecutive EuroBasket title by defeating Czechoslovakia 63-52 in a round robin tournament game in Istanbul. Viktor Zubkov is named tournament MVP. Czechoslovakia finishes in second place, followed by France in third.
1965
Billy Donovan is born in Rockville Centre, New York. His father Bill Sr. was a standout player at Boston College.
1975
The Knicks sign ABA MVP George McGinnis to a four year deal while simultaneously buying out the remainder of his contract with the ABA’s Pacers. But because McGinnis’ NBA draft rights were held by the 76ers, the league office voided the contract a few days later, fined the Knicks $400,000, and stripped their 1976 first round draft pick.
1976
Radoslav “Rasho” Nesterovic is born in Ljubjana, Slovenia (then Yugoslavia). After retiring as a player, he served as the Slovenia Basketball Federation Secretary-General for nearly a decade.
Rookie sensation Alvan Adams finishes with 33 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Suns to a 105-98 victory over the Celtics in game three of the NBA Finals.
1987
An Eastern Conference Finals battle comes down to the final minute of game seven, with the Celtics prevailing 117-114 over the Pistons. Larry Bird leads the Celtics with 37 points while Joe Dumars finishes with 35 for the Pistons in a losing effort. Detroit’s Adrian Dantley misses the fourth quarter with a concussion.
1991
The Lakers complete a minor upset of the Trail Blazers in the Western Conference Finals with a 91-90 victory in game six. Magic Johnson finishes with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists while Terry Porter leads Portland with 24 points but misses a potential game winner in the final seconds.
1992
Harrison Barnes is born in Ames, Iowa. He led Ames High School to back-to-back undefeated seasons and Iowa state titles in 2009 and 2010.
Jeremy Lamb is born in Henrico, Virginia. His father Rolando hit a buzzer beater to lead VCU to a first round victory over Northeastern in the 1984 NCAA Tournament.
1996
WNBA champion Myisha Hines-Allen is born in Montclair, New Jersey.
2003
Shaedon Sharpe is born in London, Canada. He regularly returns to his hometown to sponsor free youth basketball clinics.
2007
During a radio interview with Stephen A. Smith, Kobe Bryant announces that he is demanding a trade from the Lakers, setting off a firestorm of speculation. The two sides eventually reconciled and Bryant wound up playing his entire career with the franchise, retiring in 2016.
The Spurs continue their dominant postseason run with a 109-84 victory over the Jazz in game five of the Western Conference Finals, clinching the series.
2009
The Magic wrap up a stunning Eastern Conference Finals upset of the Cavaliers with a 103-90 victory in game five. Dwight Howard leads the way with 40 points and 14 rebounds.
2014
The Heat become the first team since the ’86-’87 Celtics to reach four consecutive NBA Finals, clinching the Eastern Conference Finals with a 117-92 victory over the Pacers in game six. LeBron James and Chris Bosh score 25 points each for Miami.
2016
Stephen Curry leads the way with 36 points and eight assists as the Warriors complete a 3-1 series comeback with a 96-88 victory over the Thunder in game seven of the Western Conference Finals. Kevin Durant finishes with 27 points in his last game in a Thunder jersey before signing with Golden State in the subsequent offseason.
