David Robinson reports for duty; Dr. J leads the Sixers to the NBA Finals; Jordan and the Bulls rip out Cleveland’s hearts again

1987

A few weeks before the NBA Draft, David Robinson reports to Trident submarine base in Kings Bay, Georgia, to begin his two years of active duty in the Naval Service. At the time, there was a 6’6″ height limit for U.S. Navy midshipmen but the 7’1″ Robinson was granted a special waiver. The Spurs soon after drafted him #1 overall and he joined the team for the ’89-’90 season when his tour ended.


1963

NCAA All-American Jon Koncak is born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

1966

Danny Manning is born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. His father Ed was a star player at Jackson State at the time, and later spent eight seasons in the NBA and ABA.

1970

Hubert Davis is born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His family soon after relocated to Burke, Virginia, where Davis was classmates at Lake Braddock High School with soccer legend Mia Hamm and basketball teammates with future Olympic track gold medalist Allen Johnson.

1977

Pablo Prigioni is born in Rio Tercero, Argentina. He won a bronze medal with the Argentinean national team at the 2008 Olympics.

Julius Erving scores 34 points to lead the 76ers to a 112-109 victory over the Rockets in game six of the Eastern Conference Finals, clinching an NBA Finals appearance in his first year in the league.

1978

The SuperSonics defeat the Nuggets 123-108 in game six of the Western Conference Finals, clinching the first NBA Finals appearance in franchise history.

1979

Jack Sikma leads the way with 33 points and 11 rebounds as the SuperSonics defeat the Suns 114-110 in a winner-take-all game seven of the Western Conference Finals.

1982

Tony Parker is born in Bruges, Belgium. His father Tony, Sr. was born in Chicago and starred at Loyola before playing professionally in Belgium and France.

1983

Channing Frye is born in White Plains, New York. His grandfather, John Mulzac, was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen and his grand uncle, Henry Frye, was the first Black Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

1987

A classic Celtics-Bucks Eastern Conference Semifinals series comes down to game seven, with Boston prevailing 119-113. All three members of the Celtics front court have huge games, as Larry Bird finishes with 31 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists, Robert Parish has 23 points, 19 rebounds, and four blocks, and Kevin McHale adds 26 points and 15 rebounds.

1992

In a winner-take-all game seven, the Cavaliers defeat the Celtics 122-104 to close out the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Larry Bird finishes with 12 points in what would prove to be his final NBA game.

1993

A Michael Jordan buzzer beater ends a Bulls sweep of the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, with a 103-101 game four win. It marked the fourth and final series in which Jordan and the Bulls eliminated the Cavaliers.

1997

The Rockets hold off a late comeback attempt from the SuperSonics for a 96-91 victory in the winner-take-all game seven of the Western Conference Semifinals. Shawn Kemp finishes with 21 points and 10 rebounds in his final game in a Seattle uniform, as he’s traded to the Cavaliers in the ensuing offseason.

2011

Dirk Nowitzki sets an NBA single game playoff record by making 24 free throws without a miss, and finishes with 48 points, as the Mavericks defeat the Thunder 121-115 in game one of the Western Conference Finals.

2015

The Rockets complete a 3-1 series comeback with a 113-100 victory over the Clippers in game seven of the Western Conference Semifinals. James Harden leads the Rockets with 31 points and eight assists.
