1980

With Kareem Abdul-Jabbar sidelined with a sprained ankle, Magic Johnson steps in as the starting center and dominates game six of the NBA Finals, finishing with 42 points, 15 rebounds, and seven assists in a 123-107 Lakers victory over the 76ers to finish the series. Jamaal Wilkes also comes up big for L.A., dropping 37 points and 10 rebounds. The rookie sensation Johnson is named Finals MVP.


1920

NBA champion Arnie Johnson is born in Gonvick, Minnesota.

1963

The United States and Yugoslavia face off for the first time in FIBA World Championship competition and the Yugoslavians are victorious, 76-74, in a second round match-up in Rio de Janeiro.

1964

John Salley is born in Brooklyn, New York. He had a major growth spurt at the age of 14, purportedly brought about by a fall that impacted his pituitary gland.

1976

Rookie sensation Alvan Adams finishes with 18 points and 20 rebounds as the Suns finish off a stunning Western Conference Finals upset over the Warriors with a 94-86 win in game seven. The Suns advance to the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history.

1984

Despite a lack of approval from the league office, Clippers owner Donald Sterling moves the franchise from San Diego to his hometown of Los Angeles.

1987

Doc Rivers sets the Hawks franchise single game playoff record with 22 assists in a 118-109 victory over the Celtics in game four of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

1999

The Knicks become just the second #8 seed to upset a #1 seed in a first round NBA playoff series by defeating the Heat 78-77 in a game five slugfest that ended with an Allan Houston game winning jumper.

The Jazz manage to avoid a first round upset bid from the Kings, emerging victorious in overtime of a winner-take-all game five. Vlade Divac has a chance to win it in regulation for Sacramento but misses a short jumper, necessitating overtime, where the Jazz pull away for the 99-92 win.

2000

A dominant defensive performance from the Lakers lifts them to an 87-65 victory over the Suns in game five of the Western Conference Semifinals, clinching the series. Phoenix shoots just 28.8% from the field in the loss, including Jason Kidd shooting 3-of-13 and Penny Hardaway shooting 1-of-9.

2001

Allen Iverson scores 52 points in game five of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, a 121-88 76ers win over the Raptors. Having also scored 54 points in game two, Iverson becomes only the second player, after Michael Jordan, to score 50+ points in multiple games of a single playoff series. In between the two games, Iverson was named league MVP for the ’00-’01 season.

2018

Mike Budenholzer is hired as head coach of the Bucks. He would ultimately compile a 271-120 record over the next five seasons and lead the team to a championship in 2021.

2019

The inaugural FIBA Africa Basketball League season kicks off with group stage play. Established by the NBA and FIBA, the new league aims to expand basketball in the African continent. The first championship is eventually won by Zamalek SC, a club from Egypt.
