Game four of the NBA Finals between the 76ers and Lakers provides one of the all-time greatest highlight reel shots, a sweeping Julius Erving reverse lay-up from behind the basket. Erving finishes the game with 23 points as the 76ers win 105-102 to even the series at 2-2. But the Lakers were subsequently victorious in games five and six to clinch the series.
1924
Leo Barnhorst is born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980.
1934
Jack Twyman is born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was cut three times from the basketball team at Central Catholic High School but eventually made the roster and earned Pennsylvania all-state honors as a senior.
1955
After four seasons in Milwaukee, the Hawks re-locate to St. Louis, where they remain until moving again to Atlanta in 1968.
1966
In what’s considered the first modern NBA Draft, the territorial pick is eliminated and a coin flip is instituted to determine the first and second picks. The Knicks win the coin flip and select Walt Hazzard (Michigan) #1 overall, while the Pistons land Dave Bing (Syracuse) with the second pick.
1973
Bill Russell is hired as head coach of the SuperSonics, replacing Bucky Buckwalter, who served on an interim basis late in the ’72-’73 season.
1975
Phil Chenier scores 24 points as the Bullets close out an Eastern Conference Finals upset of the defending champion Celtics with a 98-92 victory in game six.
1981
Lauren Jackson is born in Albury, Australia. In 2003, she became the first foreign born player to earn a WNBA MVP trophy.
1986
Game seven of the Eastern Conference Semifinals comes down to the wire, with the Bucks hanging on for a 113-112 victory over the 76ers after a Julius Erving buzzer beater attempt goes awry. Moses Malone missed the series due to an orbital fracture and was traded in the ensuing offseason to the Bullets, while the contest also served as the final NBA appearance for two Hall of Fame inductees: Bob McAdoo and Bobby Jones.
1992
In the highest scoring NBA playoff game of all time, the Trail Blazers defeat the Suns 153-151 in double overtime, in game four of their Western Conference Semifinals. Eight players finish the game with 20+ points, led by Phoenix’s Kevin Johnson with 35.
1993
Maurice Harkless is born in Queens, New York. He started his high school career at Forest Hills in Queens before transferring to South Kent School in Connecticut.
1994
Courtney Williams is born in Folkston, Georgia. She broke the Charlton County High School single game scoring record with 42 points in a 2011 game, breaking a mark that had previously been held for over two decades by her mother Michelle.
1995
Kevin Garnett announces that he is forgoing his college eligibility and declaring for the upcoming NBA Draft. He is drafted fifth overall by the Timberwolves and subsequently becomes the first player in 20 years to reach the NBA straight from high school.
2001
Vince Carter sets the Raptors franchise playoffs record with 50 points in a 102-78 victory over the 76ers in game three of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
