Michael Jordan hits “The Shot,” a buzzer beating jumper over Cleveland’s Craig Ehlo to clinch the winner-take-all game five of a first round Bulls series victory 101-100 over the Cavaliers. Jordan finishes the game with 44 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Though he’s remembered chiefly for his role in the final play, Ehlo was also the Cavs’ leading scorer in the game, with 24 points off the bench.
1937
Lithuania are champions of the second EuroBasket, defeating Italy 24-23 in the Final in Riga, Latvia. France finishes in third place, while the host and defending champion Latvia finishes in sixth.
1942
NBA champion Bob Weiss is born in Easton, Pennsylvania.
1962
Tony Campbell is born in Teaneck, New Jersey. Initially a baseball player in his youth, he switched to basketball in seventh grade due to disagreements with his middle school baseball manager.
1968
The Oakland Oaks are crowned champions of the ABA with a 135-131 win over the Indiana Pacers in game five of the ABA Finals. Rookie Warren Jabali, who took over as leading scorer after Rick Barry suffered a torn ligament early in the season, finishes with 39 points and is named Playoffs MVP. Despite the successful season, the Oaks are still struggling financially and in the ensuing offseason, the franchise is sold and re-located to Washington, D.C.
1971
Jerry Lucas is traded from the Warriors to the Knicks in exchange for Cazzie Russell. Lucas goes on to win his first and only NBA title with New York in 1973.
1972
The Lakers close out one of the most dominant seasons in NBA history by defeating the Knicks 114-100 in game five of the NBA Finals to clinch the series 4-1. Wilt Chamberlain finishes with 24 points and 29 rebounds and is named Finals MVP.
1978
Four-time NBA All-Star Shawn Marion is born in Waukegan, Illinois.
1979
Katie Douglas is born in Indianapolis, Indiana. A star player at Perry Meridian High School and then Purdue University, she was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.
1994
A Dikembe Mutombo block seals a 98-94 game five overtime win over the SuperSonics for the Nuggets, who clinch the Western Conference Quarterfinals series, becoming the first #8 seed to win an NBA playoff series.
1995
Over the course of just 8.9 seconds, Reggie Miller scores eight unanswered points to give the Pacers an improbable 107-105 win over the Knicks in game one of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
The #6 seed Rockets complete the first of four consecutive NBA playoff series win as the lower seeded team, defeating the Jazz 95-91 in the winner-take-all game five of the Western Conference Quarterfinals.
2002
Fresh off a disappointing 76ers early playoff exit and amid rumors that he was feuding with coach Larry Brown, Allen Iverson gives one of the most infamous press conferences in NBA history, joking about practice before lamenting the loss of his friend, Rahsaan Langeford, who had been shot and killed just months prior.
2006
Steve Nash is named league MVP of the NBA for the second consecutive season, once again in a close voting result with LeBron James finishing in second place and Dirk Nowitzki in third. He became the third of four guards to earn the award in back-to-back seasons, after Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, later joined by Stephen Curry.
2014
Despite going into the lottery with just a 1.7% chance of winning the top pick, the Cavaliers do just that, setting themselves up to draft #1 overall for the third time in four years. They subsequently use the pick on Andrew Wiggins, then package him later in the offseason as part of a trade to acquire Kevin Love.
2023
Nikola Jokic breaks his teammate Jamal Murray’s franchise playoff single game record with 53 points, along with 11 assists, but his Nuggets lose 129-124 to the Suns in game four of their Western Conference Semifinals series. Denver went on to win the next two games to advance.
