1986

#11 seed LSU stuns top seed Kentucky in the Regional Finals of the NCAA Tournament, to advance to a surprise Final Four appearance. The Tigers are the first double-digit seed to reach the Final Four since the advent of tournament seeding in 1979. They would ultimately lose to Louisville in the National Semifinals.


1928

Ed Macauley is born in St. Louis, Missouri.

1946

Don Chaney is born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

1949

The NBA playoffs are expanded from six teams to eight and the match-ups are based on conference affiliation for the first time. In the first round series, the Knicks defeat the Baltimore Bullets, the Washington Capitols defeat the Philadelphia Warriors, the Minneapolis Lakers defeat the Chicago Stags, and the Rochester Royals defeat the St. Louis Bombers.

1955

Robert “Sonny” Parker is born in Chicago, Illinois.

1960

Wilt Chamberlain sets the still-standing rookie record for most rebounds in a playoff game, with 35 in game five of the Eastern Conference Finals, as the Warriors defeat the Celtics 128-107.

1964

Oscar Robertson is named NBA league MVP for the ’63-’64 season. Wilt Chamberlain finishes second in voting, followed by Bill Russell in third.

1966

Brian Shaw is born in Oakland, California.

1969

UCLA wins its third consecutive NCAA Tournament title, defeating coach John Wooden’s alma mater Purdue, 92-72, in the National Final. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar becomes the first and only player to be named Most Outstanding player of the NCAA Tournament three times.

1972

Shawn Bradley is born in Landstuhl, Germany.

1974

Marcus Camby is born in Hartford, Connecticut.

1979

Nikki Teasley is born in Washington, D.C.

1980

Bill Walton files a lawsuit against Trail Blazers team doctor Bob Cook, claiming that his foot injury suffered during the ’77-’78 season had been misdiagnosed. The case was eventually settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.

1990

Tate George hits one of the most iconic buzzer beaters in March Madness history, giving Connecticut a 71-70 victory over Clemson in the NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinals.

1994

Taurean Prince is born in San Marcos, Texas.

Dale Ellis becomes the first NBA player with 1,000 career three-point field goals, by shooting 2-of-6 from long distance in a SuperSonics win over the Spurs.

1995

Reggie Lewis has his jersey #35 posthumously retired by the Celtics. Of the 22 players who have been honored by Boston with a jersey retirement, only Lewis and Ed Macauley were never part of a championship roster.

1996

#5 seed Mississippi State stuns Ray Allen and top seed Connecticut in the NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinals.

2008

In just his fifth season in the NBA, LeBron James becomes the Cavaliers’ all-time leading scorer, with his 10,390th point during a win over the Raptors to surpass Brad Daugherty. James eventually extended the record to 23,119 points, more than double second place Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Daugherty is still third on the list.

2013

Philadelphia is transformed into “Dunk City” as #15 seed Florida-Gulf Coast stuns #2 seed Georgetown 78-68 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. FGCU becomes just the seventh #15 seed to win a first round game and two days later, became the first to advance to the Sweet 16.

2021

NBA legend Elgin Baylor passes away at age 86.
