1962

Wilt Chamberlain drops 34 points and 33 rebounds in a Warriors win over the Chicago Packers to wrap up the most impressive scoring season in NBA history. He sets the still-standing single season records for points per game (50.4), total points (4,029), field goals (1,597), total minutes played (3,882), 50+ point games (45), and 40+ point games (63).

Chuck Share is born in Akron, Ohio.

1944

Clyde Lee is born in Nashville, Tennessee.

1946

Wes Unseld is born in Louisville, Kentucky.

1954

With a 91-86 loss to the Pistons in Fort Wayne, the ’53-’54 Baltimore Bullets become the first and only team in NBA history to go winless on the road over the course of an entire season, with an 0-20 record.

1959

Oscar Robertson from Cincinnati is the inaugural winner of the NCAA Player of the Year award, as voted on by the U.S. Basketball Writer’s Association. Robertson went on to repeat as Player of the Year in ’59-’60 and in 1998, the trophy was renamed the Oscar Robertson Award in his honor.

1960

In game three of a first round series against the Syracuse Nationals, a 132-112 Warriors victory, Wilt Chamberlain sets the still-standing rookie record for most points in a playoff game with 53. The win clinches the series for Philadelphia, who advances to the Eastern Conference Finals.

1962

With 19 points, 15 assists, and nine rebounds in his last regular season game, Oscar Robertson becomes the first player in NBA history to average a triple-double for an entire season. The feat would not be repeated again until Russell Westbrook in ’16-’17.

1963

After just two years in Chicago as an expansion franchise, Zephyrs ownership announce they are moving to Baltimore and renaming themselves the Bullets.

Guy Rodgers ties Bob Cousy’s NBA single game record with 28 assists in a 114-109 Warriors loss to the St. Louis Hawks. The mark would stand for 15 more years before getting broken by Kevin Porter and is still the Warriors single game franchise record.

1969

Larry Johnson is born in Tyler, Texas.

1981

On one of the wildest days in March Madness history, three incredible buzzer beaters happen in NCAA Tournament second round match-ups, resulting in the shocking elimination of two #1 seeds (Oregon State and DePaul) and the defending champions (Louisville).

1985

The first modern edition of the NCAA Tournament kicks off, with an expansion to 64 teams and an elimination of first round byes. In the biggest upset of the day, David Robinson and #13 seed Navy stun #4 seed LSU.

1986

One of the biggest NCAA Tournament upsets of the early 64-team era takes place, as #14 seed Cleveland State stuns #3 seed Indiana, 83-79.

1988

Stephen Curry is born in Akron, Ohio.

1989

Patrick Patterson is born in Washington, D.C.

1991

Richmond becomes the first #15 seed ever to win an NCAA Tournament game, with a 73-69 upset of #2 seed Syracuse.

1992

Dick McGuire has his jersey #15 retired by the Knicks. An early superstar for the franchise, McGuire was a five-time All-Star and part of three NBA Finals teams in the early ’50s.

With 31 rebounds in an 89-83 Pistons victory over the Kings, Dennis Rodman becomes the first player since Wilt Chamberlain in ’71-’72 to grab 30+ rebounds in three games in the same season. Earlier in the ’91-’92 season, Rodman had 34 rebounds in a win over the Pacers and 32 in a win over the Hornets. No player has had two 30+ rebound games in a single season since, let alone three of them.

1993

Anthony Bennett is born in Toronto, Canada.

1996

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf of the Nuggets works out a compromise with commissioner David Stern wherein Abdul-Rauf’s suspension is lifted if he stands during the anthem, but he can lower his head in prayer throughout the duration.

In what most expected to be legendary coach Pete Carril’s final game, #13 seed Princeton instead extends his career with a shocking first round NCAA Tournament upset of the defending champions, #4 seed UCLA. Princeton would go on to lose to Mississippi State in the second round, sending Carril into retirement after 29 seasons.

1998

For the first time ever in the men’s or women’s NCAA tournament, a #16 seed upsets a #1 seed in the first round, as Harvard stuns Stanford 71-67 in a women’s tournament game. The Cardinal were playing on their home court but also missing their top two players, Vanessa Nygard and Kristin Folkl, who suffered injuries late in the season.

2000

Sean Elliott is the starting small forward for the Spurs in a victory over the Hawks, becoming the first major pro athlete to return to their sport following a kidney transplant procedure. Elliott received his new kidney from his brother in a surgical procedure that took place in the summer of 1999 and was forced to miss San Antonio’s first 63 games of the ’99-’00 season.

2012

Mike D’Antoni resigns as head coach of the Knicks. He is replaced for the remainder of the ’11-’12 season by his assistant, Mike Woodson, who becomes the first person ever to coach the NBA team that drafted them (Woodson was a first round pick of the Knicks in 1980).

2021

Rudy Gobert sets the Jazz single game franchise record with 28 rebounds in a 131-119 loss to the Warriors. The record had previously been held by Truck Robinson for over 43 years.
