One of the greatest moments in NCAA Tournament history happens in a first round upset as Bryce Drew hits an improbable game winning buzzer beater to give #13 seed Valparaiso a 70-69 victory over #4 seed Mississippi State. Drew, who is coached by his father Homer, finishes the game with 22 points and seven assists as the Crusaders pick up their first ever tournament win.
1960
Clifford “Cliff” T. Robinson is born in Oakland, California.
1962
With a victory over the Syracuse Nationals, the Celtics finish the ’61-’62 season with a 60-20 record, becoming the first team in NBA history to reach the 60 win plateau in a season.
1965
Bill Bradley finishes with 41 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists as Princeton clinches its first and only Final Four appearance in program history with a 109-69 victory over Providence in the East Regional Final in College Park, Maryland. Jimmy Walker scores 27 points for the Friars in the losing effort.
1973
Bobby Jackson is born in East Spencer, North Carolina.
1980
Caron Butler is born in Racine, Washington.
1991
Tristan Thompson is born in Brampton, Canada.
1997
#15 seed Coppin State doesn’t just upset #2 seed South Carolina but dominates them, pulling away late for a 78-65 victory in the NCAA Tournament first round. The Eagles became just the third #15 seed to win a first round game and came close to making it as far as the Sweet 16, losing by just one point in the second round to Texas.
1999
By taking the floor for the Mavericks in a win over the Grizzlies, A.C. Green becomes the first player in NBA history to play in 1,000 consecutive games.
2001
The NCAA Tournament adds a “play-in game” for the first time, expanding the tournament field from 64 teams to 65. Northwestern State defeats Winthrop 71-67 in Dayton to advance to the main bracket as a #16 seed (where they were subsequently defeated by Illinois).
Paul Pierce torches the Lakers for 42 points in a losing effort, inspiring Los Angeles’ Shaquille O’Neal to nickname him as “The Truth” in a postgame interview.
2022
Kevin Garnett has his jersey #5 retired by the Celtics. Traded to Boston in 2007, Garnett was Defensive Player of the Year and a champion in his first of six seasons with the franchise.
