Glen Rice is traded, along with B.J. Armstrong and J.R. Reid, from the Hornets to the Lakers, in exchange for Eddie Jones and a disgruntled Elden Campbell. Rice had not played at all during the ’98-’99 season for the Hornets due to elbow surgery but eventually became a key piece of the Lakers’ 2000 title team.

During a Lakers win over the Nuggets, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar becomes the all-time NBA leader in personal fouls, a record he still holds.
Ron Harper records 10 steals during a 100-91 Cavaliers loss to the 76ers, setting both the NBA rookie record and the Cavaliers franchise record.
1990
In a ceremony celebrating the 20th anniversary of their first title team, the Knicks retire Dick Barnett’s #12 jersey and honor coach Red Holzman by retiring jersey #613 for his 613 coaching wins. Barnett spent nine seasons with New York, including their championship runs in 1970 and 1973.

Zach LaVine is born in Renton, Washington.
2000
Joe Dumars has his jersey #4 retired by the Pistons during a pre-game ceremony, during which the NBA also announces that it is renaming its annual sportsmanship award after the Hall of Fame guard.
2002
John Stockton becomes the first, and still only, player to reach 15,000 career assists, by logging 13 during a 95-92 Jazz loss to the Rockets.
2004
Tracy McGrady sets the Magic single game franchise record with 62 points in a 108-99 victory over the Wizards. It breaks the record previously held by Shaquille O’Neal for nearly 10 years.
