Wilt scores 100 points; the first NBA All-Star Game; LeBron reaches an unprecedented scoring milestone

1962

Wilt Chamberlain sets the all-time single game scoring record with his incredible 100 point game, in a 169-147 Warriors win over the Knicks. The game was played at a neutral site in Hershey, Pennsylvania and attended by only about 4,000 fans. Chamberlain, who was reportedly hungover from partying the night before, broke his own record of 78 points, which he had set previously in the ’61-’62 season.


1951

Basketball makes its Pan American Games debut in Buenos Aires. In the first day of competition, the United States defeats Cuba 77-59. The U.S. roster is split between players from Indiana State and from various AAU squads, led by Don Barksdale.

The first ever NBA All-Star Game takes place at the Boston Garden. Ed Macauley of the Celtics is named MVP after scoring 20 points to lead the Eastern Conference to a 111-94 win over the West. Other notable players in the game include Bob Cousy making his first of 13 appearances, Dolph Schayes making his first of 12 appearances, George Mikan making his first of four appearances, and Joe Fulks making his first of two appearances.

1974

North Carolina makes an improbable late comeback against Duke in a 96-92 victory. Duke led the game 86-78 with 17 seconds left in the second half, but a furious UNC comeback was capped off by a Walter Davis buzzer beater to force overtime, where the Tar Heels prevailed.

1987

Jonas Jerebko is born in Kinna, Sweden.

1993

Alex English his his jersey #7 retired by the Nuggets. In 10-and-a-half seasons with Denver, English was an eight-time All-Star and became the franchise’s all-time leader in scoring and assists.

1997

Arike Ogunbowale is born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

2024

LeBron James becomes the first ever NBA player to score 40,000 career points, reaching the milestone during a 124-114 Lakers loss to the Nuggets.
