1995

Clyde Drexler is traded from the Trail Blazers to the Rockets, along with Tracy Murray, in exchange for a disgruntled Otis Thorpe and a first round pick. Drexler leaves Portland as the franchise’s all-time leader in points, rebounds, steals, games played, and All-Star appearances. He goes on to help lead the Rockets to a championship, the first of his career.


1942

Wali Jones is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1957

Owner Fred Zollner announces that the Pistons are re-locating from Fort Wayne to Detroit, starting with the upcoming ’57-’58 season.

1966

Wilt Chamberlain becomes the NBA’s all-time scoring leader, surpassing Bob Pettit with his 20,881st point during a 149-123 76ers victory over the Pistons. Chamberlain held the record for over 18 years until it was broken by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

1971

Gheorghe Mureșan is born in Tritenii de Jos, Romania.

1977

Tyus Edney is born in Gardena, California.

1978

Richard Hamilton is born in Coatesville, Pennsvylvania.

1981

Kara Lawson is born in Alexandria, Virginia.

1986

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar becomes the NBA’s all-time leader in minutes played, surpassing Elvin Hayes during a 141-117 Lakers victory over the Hawks. Abdul-Jabbar eventually finished his NBA career with 57,446 minutes played, which is still the record.

1987

Candice Wiggins is born in Baltimore, Maryland.

1990

Due to his jersey being stolen right before game time, Michael Jordan takes the court for the Bulls in a generic #12 jersey with no name on the back. Though Jordan scores 49 points, the Bulls lose 135-129 against the Magic.

2009

NBA commissioner David Stern announces during All-Star Weekend that the Finals MVP trophy will be named the “Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player” award going forward. The decision is made in honor of Russell, who won a record 11 NBA championships but never Finals MVP, as the award was only available starting in 1969.

During All-Star Weekend in Phoenix, the NBA debuts a new event, a H-O-R-S-E competition. Named G-E-I-C-O for sponsorship purposes, the contest is won by Kevin Durant over Joe Johnson and O.J. Mayo. H-O-R-S-E comes back one more time in 2010 before the NBA shuts it down.

2010

The NBA All-Star Game takes place at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas and sets the attendance record for any basketball game, with 108,713 recorded fans. They’re treated to an exciting match-up, with Denver’s Carmelo Anthony missing a potential buzzer beater, giving the Eastern Conference a 141-139 victory. Dwyane Wade is named MVP, while Kevin Durant scores 15 points in his All-Star debut.

2016

The Western Conference defeats the East 196-173 in an NBA All-Star Game notable for being the first to take outside of the U.S., in Toronto, and the 18th and final appearance of Kobe Bryant. Russell Westbrook also makes history as the first player to earn back-to-back All-Star MVP awards.

2019

Russell Westbrook sets the NBA record for consecutive triple-doubles with his 11th in a row, finishing with 44 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists in a Thunder loss to the Pelicans.
