1988

Michael Jordan is victorious in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in front of his home fans in Chicago, defeating Dominique Wilkins in the final round in arguably the greatest competition in the event’s history. In a rematch of the 1985 finals, Jordan edged out Wilkins with a perfect 50 on his final dunk, a signature free throw line leap. It was Jordan’s final appearance in the contest, while Wilkins returned one more time to win it in 1990.

1960

Wilt Chamberlain sets the NBA record for most rebounds by a rookie, with 45 (along with 44 points) in a 129-126 Philadelphia Warriors victory over the Syracuse Nationals.

1970

The NBA announces that expansion franchises have been awarded to Buffalo (Braves, now the Los Angeles Clippers), Cleveland (Cavaliers), and Portland (Trail Blazers).

Chet Walker scores the most points in a single game ever for a Bulls player besides Michael Jordan, with 56 in a win over the Cincinnati Royals.

1983

Micheal Ray Richardson is traded from the Warriors to the Nets in exchange for Sleepy Floyd and Mickey Johnson. Despite being a three-time All-Star and the NBA assist leader in ’79-’80, this was the second trade in a three month span for Richardson, setting off (later confirmed) rumors that he was inconsistent due to struggles with drug abuse.

1985

Kris Humphries is born in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

1988

Larry Bird wins his third consecutive NBA All-Star Three-Point Contest title, becoming the only player ever to do so and setting an overall mark that only Craig Hodges has matched since.

1989

Jonny Flynn is born in Niagara Falls, New York.

1995

Maurice Cheeks has his jersey #10 retired by the 76ers. As the team’s floor general for 11 seasons, Cheeks was an All-Star four times and a key part of the ’82-’83 championship team.

During a timeout late in a Rockets road loss to the Trail Blazers, Vernon Maxwell enters the stands and punches a heckling fan. Maxwell was later fined $20,000 for the incident and suspended for 10 games. Clyde Drexler scores 16 points for the Blazers in the game and just eight days later is traded to the Rockets to take over Maxwell’s vacated starting shooting guard spot.

1996

Kevon Looney is born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

2008

Shaquille O’Neal is traded from the Heat to the Suns in exchange for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks.

2009

Chris Webber has his jersey #4 retired by the Kings. Sacramento traded for Webber in 1998 and he made four All-Star Games for the team.
