John Stockton surpasses Magic Johnson as the NBA’s all-time assist leader, with his 9,992nd assist during a 129-88 Jazz win over the Nuggets. Stockton would eventually retire with 15,806 assists.

Dolph Schayes becomes just the sixth player in NBA history to score 50 or more points in a game, finishing with 50 in a 139-137 Syracuse Nationals overtime loss to the Celtics.

Malik Sealy is born in The Bronx, New York.

Walter McCarty is born in Evansville, Indiana.

1980

Adrian Dantley is traded from the Pacers to the Nuggets, along with a first round pick, in exchange for George McGinnis. While Dantley blossomed into a superstar in Denver, McGinnis struggled in his return to Indiana and lasted just two-and-a-half more seasons before retiring.

Kevin Martin is born in Zanesville, Ohio.

David Stern becomes the fourth commissioner in NBA history, replacing his longtime mentor, Larry O’Brien, who had served since 1975.

1987

Buck Williams sets the Nets single game franchise record with 27 rebounds in a 150-147 overtime loss to the Warriors.

2008

Pau Gasol is traded from the Grizzlies to the Lakers, along with a second round pick, in exchange for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Marc Gasol, Aaron McKie, and two first round picks.

2010

Kobe Bryant surpasses Jerry West as the Lakers’ all-time leading scorer, with his 25,193rd career point during a 95-93 Lakers loss to the Grizzlies.
