2006

Kobe Bryant scores 81 points in a 122-104 Lakers win over the Raptors, the second highest total in a single game in NBA history. It also breaks Elgin Baylor’s single game Lakers franchise record. Bryant shot 28-of-46 from the field (60.9%), 7-of-13 from three-point range (53.8%), and 18-of-20 from the free throw line (90.0%). The next leading Lakers scorer was Chris Mihm with 12 points.


1953

With a 49-36 victory over the host country Chile, the United States clinches the title in the first ever FIBA World Championship for Women. Chile settles for the silver medal, while France earns the bronze.

1960

Rookie Wilt Chamberlain makes his NBA All-Star Game debut and makes the most of it in front of his home fans in Philadelphia, finishing with 23 points and 25 rebounds and getting named MVP as his Eastern Conference defeated the West, 125-115.

1968

The NBA announces that Milwaukee and Phoenix have been granted expansion franchises for the upcoming ’68-’69 season.

1980

Pete Maravich signs as a free agent with the Celtics just a few days after being waived by the Jazz. He played out the remainder of the ’79-’80 season with Boston before retiring due to lingering knee issues.

1988

Greg Oden is born in Buffalo, New York.

1992

Australian Olympic Federation member Dr. Brian Sando makes an official recommendation that the Australian men’s basketball team should boycott any potential games at the 1992 Olympics with the United States, as playing against the HIV positive Magic Johnson would be a health and safety concern. Though the declaration received headlines, the Australia Basketball Committee and most members of the national team swiftly distanced themselves from Sando and his comments and no boycott was ever seriously considered.

1994

Dennis Rodman sets the Spurs single game franchise record with 32 rebounds in a 103-83 victory over the Mavericks. It breaks his own record of 29, which he had set just a couple months prior. Rodman also holds the single game record for the Pistons (though not the Bulls).

1996

Dillon Brooks is born in Mississauga, Canada.

1998

The NBA comes to a broadcasting agreement with ESPN and ABC, set to start in 2002, ending a lengthy relationship with NBC.

1999

After 11 seasons with the team and six championships, Scottie Pippen is traded from the Bulls to the Rockets in exchange for Roy Rogers and a second round pick.

Vlade Divac signs as a free agent with the Kings. After two relatively subpar seasons with the Hornets, Divac revives his career as a play making center in Sacramento.

2016

Despite the team having a 30-11 record and coming off an NBA Finals appearance, David Blatt is fired as head coach of the Cavaliers. He is replaced by Tyronn Lue, who ultimately leads the team to its first ever championship at the end of the season.

2024

Karl-Anthony Towns breaks his own Timberwolves single game franchise record with 62 points in a 128-125 loss to the Hornets.

Joel Embiid breaks Wilt Chamberlain’s 76ers single game franchise record with 70 points in a 133-123 victory over the Spurs. Chamberlain’s mark of 68 points had held as the record for 56 years. Embiid also becomes only the third center in NBA history to score 70 or more in a game, joining Chamberlain and David Robinson on the list.
