Spencer Haywood sues the NBA; Notre Dame ends UCLA’s record win streak; Michael Jordan becomes a Wizards owner; LeBron is the youngest ever with a triple-double.

1971

Spencer Haywood and the NBA file competing lawsuits against each other over the player’s signing with the Seattle SuperSonics without meeting the league’s draft eligibility rules. With financial backing from Sonics owner Sam Schulman, Haywood eventually won both cases, forcing the NBA to institute a “hardship clause” allowing for early entry into the draft.

Jeff Van Gundy is born in Hemet, California

Michael Adams is born in Hartford, Connecticut.

1969

Luc Longley is born in Melbourne, Australia. His father, Richard, was also a basketball player, representing Australia at two Olympics.

1974

Notre Dame upsets UCLA 71-70, ending the Bruins’ record winning streak at 88 games. UCLA gets revenge a week later, winning the re-match 94-75.

1988

JaVale McGee is born in Flint, Michigan. His mother, Pamela, was a two-time NCAA champion with USC and a gold medalist at the 1984 Olympics.

2000

Michael Jordan becomes part owner and president of the Washington Wizards, roles he would ultimately hold for less than two years before opting to make a comeback as a player.

2001

Suns All-Star Jason Kidd is arrested at his home in Phoenix on charges of spousal abuse against his then wife, Joumana. Kidd pled guilty but was only sentenced with a small fine and mandatory anger management classes. The couple later divorced in 2007, each citing further domestic violence incidents perpetrated by the other.

2005

Just 20 days after his 20th birthday, LeBron James becomes the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double, with 27 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 107-101 Cavaliers victory over the Trail Blazers. James breaks the record previously held by Lamar Odom and holds it until 2017, when it’s broken by Markelle Fultz.

2019

The Rockets set the NBA single game record with 68 three-point field goal attempts during a 138-134 overtime victory over the Lakers. Houston connects on just 25 of those attempts, for a 36.8% shooting clip. James Harden leads the way with 19 attempts, making eight of them and finishing with 48 points.
