2002

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is fined $500,000 by the NBA league office over his criticism of officiating during a Mavs loss to the Spurs. At the time, it was the largest fine for an individual person in NBA history, a record that was eventually eclipsed by disgraced Clippers owner Donald Sterling.


1957

Calvin Natt is born in Monroe, Louisiana. He spurned a scholarship offer from LSU to stay at home and attend Louisiana-Monroe (then called Northeast Louisiana University). In his senior year, Natt became the school’s first and only All-American.

1967

Willie Anderson is born in Greenville, South Carolina. His family relocated to Atlanta in his childhood and he was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2020 for his contributions to East Atlanta High School and the University of Georgia.

1970

Tom Boerwinkle sets the Bulls single game franchise record with 37 rebounds in a 152-123 victory over the Suns. Moses Malone in 1979 is the only other player to total 37 or more rebounds in a single game since 1970.

1972

The NCAA votes to begin allowing freshmen to play varsity basketball. Previously, first year college players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain were forced to participate in junior varsity.

1984

The NCAA announces that the 1985 men’s tournament will expand from 48 teams to 64. This ushers in the modern era of March Madness.

1992

Stefanie Dolson is born in Port Jervis, New York. She was named a McDonald’s All-American while starring for Minisink Valley High School.
