
1960
Former Kentucky All-American Bill Spivey files a lawsuit against the NBA, after the Cincinnati Royals rescinded their contract offer to him under pressure from the league office. Spivey had previously been banned for life from the NBA due to his connection to the 1951 point shaving scandal, even though he denied involvement and was acquitted by a grand jury. The case was eventually settled out of court but Spivey ultimately never played in the NBA.
1961
Cliff Levingston is born in San Diego, California. He didn’t play organized basketball until high school, instead spending his youth concentrating on baseball like his cousin, Mark McLemore, who eventually played 18 seasons in the MLB.
1962
NBA champion and Olympic gold medalist Joe Kleine is born in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
1965
Doris Burke (nee Sable) is born in West Islip, New York. Growing up, she spent her summers playing on the famed outdoor courts of the Jersey Shore.
1984
Adrian Dantley makes 28 free throws in a 116-111 Jazz win over the Rockets, tying Wilt Chamberlain for the all-time NBA single game record.
1982
Al Jefferson is born in Monticello, Mississippi. He scored 56 points in a losing effort for Prentiss High School in the semifinals of the 2004 Mississippi state tournament.
Former coach (and then current general manager) Red Auerbach is honored by the Celtics in a pre-game ceremony at the Boston Garden. The team retires the jersey #2 in Auerbach’s honor, representing his status as the second most important person in franchise history behind only founder and original owner Walter Brown.
1988
Larry Nance sets the Suns single game franchise record with 10 blocks in a 122-114 loss to the 76ers. Nance also finishes with 17 points and 11 rebounds for only the second triple-double of his career.
2004
Victor Wembanyama is born in Le Chesnay, France. His mother, Elodie, played basketball for the French national team.
Dikembe Mutombo ties the Knicks single game franchise record with 10 blocks in a 95-85 loss to the Nets. At age 37, Mutombo also becomes the oldest player ever to top 10 blocks in a single NBA game (breaking his own record that he had set at age 35).
2016
In an NCAA men’s showdown of the top two teams in the country, Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield finishes with 46 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists but Kansas prevails in triple overtime, 109-106.
