1990

Scott Skiles has 30 assists in a 155-116 Magic win over the Nuggets, setting the still-standing single game NBA record. Skiles also finishes the game with 22 points, six rebounds, and two steals. The previous single game record was 29, which had been set by Kevin Porter in 1978. Prior to this game, Skiles’ previous career high had been 18 assists.


1947

Steve Mix is born in Toledo, Ohio. He stayed in his hometown for college and had such a star career that his jersey #50 was the first (and still only) retired by the University of Toledo.

1963

Two-time EuroLeague champion Johnny Rogers is born in Fullerton, California.

1964

In the semifinals of the Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden, Bill Bradley drops 41 points but fouls out with under five minutes left and Princeton leading by 12 points. Michigan’s Cazzie Russell then leads an incredible comeback for an 80-78 Wolverines victory.

1977

Kenyon Martin is born in Saginaw, Michigan. His (estranged) father, Paul Roby, was a star player for Saginaw High School and then played college ball at New Mexico.

1978

NBA champion Devin Brown is born in Salt Lake City, Utah.

1980

D.J. Mbenga is born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Zaire). His father, a government employee, was detained during the First Congo War but D.J. and his mother were able to escape to Belgium as refugees.

1984

LeBron James is born in Akron, Ohio.

1999

At 20 years and 54 days, Lamar Odom becomes the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double, with 10 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 122-100 Clippers loss to the Rockets. It breaks a record held for 20 years by Magic Johnson.

2020

Becky Hammon becomes the first woman ever to serve as an NBA head coach, taking over for the Spurs during a 127-101 loss to the Lakers when Gregg Popovich was ejected from the game.

2023

Tyrese Haliburton ties Jamaal Tinsley’s Pacers single game franchise record with 23 assists in a 140-126 victory over the Knicks.
