Red Holzman is named head coach of the Knicks, replacing Dick McGuire, who stayed on staff as an assistant coach and a scout. Over the next 15 years, Holzman would establish himself as the greatest coach in Knicks history, leading the team to two championships, earning the franchise’s first NBA Coach of the Year award, and compiling a franchise record 613 wins.

Thomas “Dike” Eddleman is born in Centralia, Illinois. He was a three-sport star in basketball, football, and track and field at both Centralia High School at the University of Illinois.

Nolan Richardson is born in El Paso, Texas. His first coaching job was at Bowie High School in his hometown.

NBA coach Ron Rothstein is born in The Bronx, New York.
1954
Kent Benson is born in New Castle, Indiana. He was named Indiana Mr. Basketball in 1973 while starring for New Castle Chrysler High School.

NCAA coaching legend Mark Few is born in Creswell, Oregon.
Bill Self is born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. His father, Bill, Sr., was the girl’s basketball coach at the local high school.

NCAA championship coach Kevin Ollie is born in Dallas, Texas.

NBA champion Dahntay Jones is born in Trenton, New Jersey.
1991
Tim Hardaway sets the still standing single game record by attempting 17 field goals with none made. Hardaway finishes the game with two points (shooting 2-of-2 on free throws) and 13 assists as his Warriors defeat the Timberwolves 106-102 in overtime.
1994
In what would ultimately be the final game of his storied career, Moses Malone punctuates a Spurs win over the Hornets by hitting the first three-pointer of his career, an 80-foot bomb at the buzzer that was meaningless, as San Antonio won the game by 11.
1998
Luka Garza is born in Washington, D.C. At Maret School in D.C., his coach was Chuck Driesell, son of Hall of Fame inductee Lefty Driesell.
2001
Dan Issel steps down as head coach of the Nuggets and is replaced by Mike Evans. Issel’s second time as coach was a disaster, including the players boycotting practice and an incident in which he yelled a racial slur at a heckling fan.
2017
Rajon Rondo sets the Pelicans single game franchise record with a career high 25 assists in a 128-113 victory over the Nets.
2022
Luka Doncic becomes just the second player in NBA history, along with James Harden, to record a 60-point triple-double, finishing with 60 points, 21 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 126-121 Mavericks win over the Knicks.
