Wilt Chamberlain makes his NCAA debut with Kansas; the Houston Comets fold; James Harden sets a free throw shooting record

1956

Wilt Chamberlain makes his collegiate varsity debut, finishing with 52 points and 31 rebounds in an 87-69 Kansas win over Northwestern. Over the ensuing two seasons with the Jayhawks, Chamberlain averaged 29.9 points and 18.3 rebounds per game, was named an All-American twice, and won Most Outstanding Player of the 1957 NCAA Tournament.


1951

Mike Bantom is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.

Jim Brewer is born in Maywood, Illinois. He was the first star player at Proviso East High School, which has since produced further NBA talent in Doc Rivers, Michael Finley, Dee Brown, and Shannon Brown.

1962

Tammy Jackson is born in Gainesville, Florida. She starred for Buchholz High School and then stayed in Gainesville to play for University of Florida.

1963

The Philippines clinch their second consecutive FIBA Asia Cup title with a 91-77 victory over Taiwan in the championship game in Taipei. South Korea defeats Thailand to earn the bronze medal.

1970

NBA champion Lindsey Hunter is born in Jackson, Mississippi.

1980

Kiki Vandeweghe is traded along with a first round pick from the Mavericks to the Nuggets in exchange for two first round picks, after the rookie had refused to play for the expansion franchise and held out of training camp and the pre-season.

1985

Robert Swift is born in Bakersfield, California. After starring at three different high schools in Bakersfield, he initially committed to nearby USC but opted to enter the NBA Draft early instead.

Marcus Williams is born in Los Angeles, California. He initially played at Crenshaw High School before transferring to the prestigious Oak Hill Academy in Virginia.

1990

The Celtics honor recently retired broadcaster Johnny Most with a banner decorated with a microphone raised to the rafters at the Boston Garden. Most had retired at the conclusion of the ’89-’90 season after 37 years on the radio and television.

2008

The WNBA announces that the Houston Comets franchise will be folding ahead of the next season, despite the team being the league’s first dynasty with four consecutive titles between 1997 and 2000.

2019

James Harden sets an NBA record with 24 free throws made without a miss, finishing with 50 points in a 135-133 Rockets loss to the Spurs.
