1954

The Baltimore Bullets officially fold 14 games into the ’54-’55 season. Done in chiefly by the erratic behavior of their owner/coach Clair Bee, the Bullets become the 15th and final NBA franchise to fold, and the only to do so after winning a championship. The NBA subsequently voided the results and statistics of the 14 Bullets games.


1949

Jim Price is born in Russellville, Kentucky. Though his family moved to Indiana in his childhood, Price returned to his birth state to play college ball at Louisville and was named an All-American in 1972.

1971

NBA All-Star Nick Van Exel is born in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

1975

Nate Thurmond is traded from the Bulls to the Cavaliers, along with Rowland Garrett, in exchange for Eric Fernsten and Steve Patterson.

1979

Brendan Haywood is born in New York City, New York. His family relocated to Greensboro, North Carolina, where Haywood was a McDonald’s All-American at Dudley High School and then helped the North Carolina Tar Heels reach the Final Four in 1998 and 2000.

1983

Donta Smith is born in Louisville, Kentucky. He was additionally naturalized as a Venezuelan citizen while playing in the country’s Superliga Profesional and represented his new nation at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship.

1987

China defeats South Korea 86-79 in overtime in the FIBA Asia Cup Final in Bangkok. Japan earns the bronze with an 89-75 win over the Philippines. Korea’s Lee Chung-Hee is named tournament MVP.

2000

Nate McMillan is named head coach of the SuperSonics, replacing Paul Westphal, who was fired just 15 games into the season. McMillan had previously spent his entire 12-year playing career with Seattle, and was an assistant under Westphal for two years before taking over.
