Ben Wilson is murdered at 17; Bill Fitch hits an NBA coaching milestone; Chris Andersen is the first D-League call-up

1984

Chicago high school phenom Ben Wilson is shot and killed at age 17. Considered the #1 prep prospect in the country, Wilson was about to start his senior season at Simeon Academy when he was assaulted during an altercation on the street. His friend and teammate Nick Anderson wore Wilson’s jersey #25 as tribute during his college and NBA career.


1922

NCAA coaching legend Abe Lemons is born in Ryan, Oklahoma.

1940

Terry Dischinger is born in Terre Haute, Indiana. In addition to being an All-American at James A. Garfield High School, Dischinger was also a standout on the football team, which was coached by his father.

1944

Earl Monroe is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His distinct style of ball handling and shooting was developed on the playground courts of South Philadelphia, where he was nicknamed “Thomas Edison” for his inventiveness.

1955

Cedric Maxwell is born in Kinston, North Carolina. He was the first NBA player ever from Kinston High School, a program that has since produced Jerry Stackhouse and Brandon Ingram.

1964

Olden Polynice is born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He has become an advocate for his home nation over the years, even going on a hunger strike during his NBA career to protest the treatment of Haitian refugees imprisoned by the United States.

1965

Reggie Lewis is born in Baltimore, Maryland. He was teammates with Muggsy Bogues at Dunbar High School.

1979

LSU All-American Stromile Swift is born in Shreveport, Louisiana.

1982

John Lucas III is born in Washington, D.C. while his father, John II, is playing for the Bullets.

1988

Larry Sanders is born in Fort Pierce, Florida. He didn’t play organized basketball until 10th grade, when the coach at his new high school recruited him for the team.

1992

Jack Sikma has his jersey #43 retired by the SuperSonics. Drafted by Seattle in 1977, Sikma spent his first nine seasons with the franchise, making seven All-Star teams and winning a championship in 1979.

1993

China defeats North Korea 93-72 in the FIBA Asia Cup final in Jakarta, clinching their ninth title. It’s North Korea’s first and only medal in Asia Cup history. South Korea earns the bronze with an 86-70 win over Iran.

1996

Bill Fitch becomes the first head coach to record 1,000 career NBA losses, when his Clippers are defeated 105-94 by the Mavericks. Fitch would finish his career in 1998 with 1,106 losses, a total only surpassed since by Lenny Wilkens.

2001

Chris Andersen becomes the first player ever called up from the NBA Developmental League, when the Nuggets claim him from the Fayetteville Patriots.

2012

Roy Hibbert sets the Pacers single game franchise record with 11 blocks in a 115-107 overtime victory over the Hornets.
