Anthony Edwards of Georgia is the #1 overall pick of the Timberwolves in the first ever virtual NBA Draft, held via videoconferencing at the ESPN facilities in Bristol, Connecticut, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Eventual Rookie of the Year LaMelo Ball is selected third overall by the Hornets. Other notable picks include Tyrese Haliburton (Iowa State) to the Pacers at #12 and Tyrese Maxey (Kentucky) to the 76ers at #21.

Len Bias is born in Landover, Maryland.

Sam Cassell is born in Baltimore, Maryland.

Jason Williams is born in Belle, West Virginia.

1980

During a Lakers victory over the Kings, Magic Johnson tears cartilage in his knee, which sidelines the star point guard for three months. He struggles upon his return, leading to the Lakers getting upset in the first round of the playoffs by the Rockets.

2002

The NBA Board of Governors approves a new expansion franchise for the city of Charlotte for the ’02-’03 season, which would eventually be named the Bobcats.

2022

Elvin Hayes has his jersey #44 retired by the Rockets. Hayes played seven seasons for the Rockets, making four All-Star teams and winning a scoring title.
