1961

Blackballed from the NBA due to his supposed role in a point shaving scandal, Connie Hawkins makes his professional basketball debut with the Pittsburgh Rens of the ABL. He was eventually named MVP in the league’s one and only full season. Eight years later, Hawkins would finally make his NBA debut at age 27, suiting up for the Suns.


1946

Jo Jo White is born in St. Louis, Missouri. He grew up cheering for the Hawks, who played in St. Louis from 1955 to 1968 before re-locating to Atlanta.

1957

Bill Russell sets the NBA single game record with 49 rebounds during a Celtics win over the Warriors. The record would be broken just three years later by Wilt Chamberlain but the mark still stands as the second highest in NBA history.

1980

Television analyst Kayte Christensen is born in Lakeview, Oregon.

1982

Amar’e Stoudemire is born in Lake Wales, Florida. Due to a transient and difficult childhood, he did not play organized basketball until age 14.

1993

Denzel Valentine is born in Lansing, Michigan. He was coached by his father, Carlton, at J.W. Sexton High School in Lansing and then followed in his footsteps by playing at Michigan State.

Patrick Ewing surpasses Walt Frazier to become the Knicks’ all-time scoring leader with his 14,618th career point during a win over the Lakers. Ewing eventually extended the record to 23,665 points, with only Frazier within 10,000 points of that mark.

1999

Bol Bol is born in Khartoum, South Sudan (then Sudan). When he was an infant, the family relocated to Connecticut as refugees to escape the Sudanese Civil War.

2000

Josh Green is born in Sydney, Australia. He has represented his home country at the 2020 and 2024 Olympics, earning a bronze medal in the former.

2001

The National Basketball Development League (now called the G-League) kicks off its inaugural season, with the Greenville Groove taking on the North Charleston Lowgators.

2006

Late in the fourth quarter of a Nuggets win over the Knicks, Mardy Collins commits a flagrant foul on J.R. Smith, which triggers a bench clearing brawl that leads to numerous suspensions, most notably 15 games for Denver’s Carmelo Anthony.

2020

Chris Paul is traded from the Thunder to the Suns, along with Abdel Nader, in exchange for Ty Jerome, Jalen Lecque, Kelly Oubre, Ricky Rubio, and a first round pick.
