Following the firing of Charles Wolf, Dave DeBusschere takes over as player-coach of the Pistons, becoming the youngest head coach in NBA history at age 24. In his first game in that capacity, DeBusschere scores 26 points to lead Detroit to a 119-117 victory over the Bullets. DeBusschere would remain in the dual role until late in the ’66-’67 season, when he was replaced as coach by Donnie Butcher.

Jamie Dixon is born in Burbank, California.

Lou Hudson ties Bob Pettit’s Hawks single game franchise record with 57 points in a 133-132 victory over the Bulls.

Earl Monroe is traded from the Baltimore Bullets to the Knicks in exchange for Mike Riordan, Dave Stallworth, and cash considerations.
1972
Host nation Japan are champions of the FIBA Asia Cup, clinching the title with a 76-68 victory over South Korea in their final game in Tokyo. The Philippines earns silver and South Korea gets bronze.
1978
Just 14 games into the ’78-’79 season, Willis Reed is fired as head coach of the Knicks and replaced by his former coach, Red Holzman.
1980
Troy Bell is born in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
1984
Kendrick Perkins is born in Nederland, Texas.
1987
D.J. Augustin is born in New Orleans, Louisiana.
1991
Tony Snell is born in Los Angeles, California.
2003
David Robinson has his jersey #50 retired by the Spurs. Over 14 seasons all spent with San Antonio, Robinson was a league MVP, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and two-time champion.
2012
Mike Brown is relieved of duties as coach by the Lakers just five games into the ’12-’13 season, setting the record for fastest firing of a head coach in the post-merger era. He is replaced by Bernie Bickerstaff on an interim basis.
