1991

In a press conference that shocks the nation, Magic Johnson announces his retirement from the NBA, following a diagnosis that he has contracted HIV. Johnson would end up stepping away for only a short period of time, coming back to appear in the 1992 All-Star Game, 1992 Olympics, and make a brief return to the Lakers in 1996.


1936

Al Attles is born in Newark, New Jersey.

1959

Billy Gillispie is born in Abilene, Texas.

Bill Russell of the Celtics and Wilt Chamberlain of the Warriors kick off their heated rivalry with their first NBA match-up. Chamberlain, in just his fourth career game, finishes with 30 points and 28 assists, but Russell, the reigning league MVP, has 22 points and 35 rebounds to lead the Celtics to a 115-106 victory.

1978

Just one year after retiring from the NBA, Bill Bradley is elected to the U.S. Senate in New Jersey, defeating Republican candidate Jeff Bell. Bradley would ultimately serve three terms in office and later run in the Democratic primary for President in 2000.

1986

Bobby Jones has his #24 jersey retired by the 76ers. The defensive stalwart was Sixth Man of the Year for Philadelphia, an All-Star twice, and a key part of the ’82-’83 title team. #24 would later be temporarily “un-retired” in 2020 for Joel Embiid as a tribute to Kobe Bryant (with Jones’ permission).

1992

David Thompson has his jersey #33 retired by the Nuggets. Over seven seasons with Denver, Thompson was ABA Rookie of the Year, an All-Star four times, and champion of the inaugural ABA Slam Dunk Contest.

1996

Joe Dumars of the Pistons is named as the first recipient of the NBA Sportsmanship Award. Upon his retirement in 1999, the NBA re-christened the Sportsmanship Award trophy as the Joe Dumars Trophy.

2002

Doug Moe is honored by the Nuggets with a retirement of jersey #432, in recognition of the number of coaching wins he achieved in his 10 seasons with the franchise.

2003

Cason Wallace is born in Dallas, Texas.

2005

The Heat opt to honor a local sports legend by retiring the #13 Miami Dolphins jersey of football Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino. The #13 is still technically in rotation for the Heat, most notably worn by Bam Adebayo.

2008

Jerry Sloan becomes the first head coach in NBA history to record 1,000 wins with the same franchise, when his Jazz defeat the Thunder 104-97.

2016

In a Warriors victory over the Pelicans, Stephen Curry becomes the first player to make 13 three-point field goals in a single game, doing so on only 17 attempts. It broke the previous record of 12, which was held by Curry himself along with Kobe Bryant and Donyell Marshall. It was broken two years later by Curry’s teammate, Klay Thompson.
