Elgin Baylor announces his retirement; the U.S. wins its first FIBA World Cup title; the Hawks move to St. Louis

1971

Just nine games into the Lakers’ season, Elgin Baylor announces his retirement due to lingering knee issues, securing his spot as one of one of the all-time greatest NBA players to never win a title. That night, Jim McMillian takes over as starting small forward and the Lakers defeat the Bullets 110-106 to kick off an NBA record 33-game winning streak.


1952

Bill Walton is born in La Mesa, California.

1954

Led by AAU superstar Kirby Minter, who is named tournament MVP, the United States clinches its first FIBA World Championship by defeating the host Brazilians 64-52 in their concluding game. The U.S. finishes the tournament undefeated at 9-0, with Brazil earning silver and the Philippines winning bronze (their first and only FIBA Worlds medal).

1955

The Hawks play their first home game in St. Louis, after moving from Milwaukee in the prior offseason. Bob Pettit finishes with 21 points and 19 rebounds as the Hawks defeat the Minneapolis Lakers 101-89.

1960

Mark West is born in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

1965

Red Kerr of the Baltimore Bullets does not enter a loss against the Celtics due to a coach’s decision, ending his record streak of 844 consecutive games played. Kerr’s record would stand for over 17 years before getting broken by Randy Smith.

1974

Jerry Stackhouse is born in Kinston, North Carolina.

1983

Darryl Dawkins sets the Nets single game franchise record with 13 blocks in a 119-112 victory over the 76ers.

1986

Ian Mahinmi is born in Rouen, France.

1987

Ovinton “O.J.” Mayo is born in Huntington, West Virginia.

1995

Trey Lyles is born in Saskatoon, Canada.
