The inaugural FIBA World Championship kicks off in Buenos Aires. 10 countries participate in a unique format that starts with a double elimination tournament and then concludes with a round robin for the top six teams. On the first day of competition, Egypt defeats Ecuador 43-37 and Peru defeats Yugoslavia 33-27.
1925
Slater Martin is born in Elmina, Texas.
1958
Elgin Baylor makes his NBA debut, finishing with 25 points and 13 rebounds as the Minneapolis Lakers defeat the Cincinnati Royals, 99-79. Baylor would finish the season earning Rookie of the Year honors and leading the Lakers to a surprise NBA Finals appearance.
1964
Drazen Petrovic is born in Sibenik, Croatia (then Yugoslavia).
1968
The United States defeats Brazil 75-63 in the Olympics semifinals in Mexico City. Jo Jo White is the leading scorer with 16 points. The other semifinal is a shocker, as Yugoslavia upsets the Soviet Union 63-62. The Soviets came into the tournament as co-favorites, as they were the reigning FIBA World Cup champions and had defeated the U.S. team in a series of pre-Olympics exhibitions.
1971
Kornel David is born in Nagykanizsa, Hungary. In 1999, he became the first Hungarian player in NBA history, when he debuted with the Bulls.
1974
Jeff McInnis is born in Charlotte, North Carolina.
1976
Former ABA stars Julius Erving and George Gervin make their NBA debut against each other, as Gervin’s Spurs defeats Erving’s 76ers 121-118. Gervin finishes with 19 points and Erving scores 17.
Tom and Dick Van Arsdale become the first twin brothers to play together in an NBA game, suiting up for the Suns in a 111-98 loss to the New Orleans Jazz. Both siblings come off the bench, with Dick finishing with 12 points and Tom scoring six.
1982
Bernard King is traded from the Warriors to the Knicks in exchange for Micheal Ray Richardson and a fifth round pick.
2021
With 23 points and 14 assists in a 115-105 Suns victory over the Lakers, Chris Paul becomes the first player in NBA history to reach the career milestones of 20,000 points and 10,000 assists.
